Frequently Asked Questions:

Question 1:
I have a copy of the textbook, but it is the 4th edition.  May I use this book rather than purchasing the 5th edition.

Answer 1:
You can use the 4th edition, but you do so at your own risk.  There may have been changes in content between the two editions.  Chances are, most of the changes are fairly small, but I am just guessing.  If you decide to stick with your older copy, my advice is to compare your text (including the problems at the end of each chapter) to a 5th edition belonging to another student in the class.  I don't want you to be at a disadvantage because you haven't seen the same questions.  By the way, this would be a good excuse to get a study partner.

Question 2:
I just tried to enroll in this course, but it is full. Can you give me special permission to enter the class?

Answer 2:
If you would like to be on the waiting list, please go to enroll.ou.edu and sign up for the interest list for the course. I will be using this as the waiting list, and I will allow students to add as others drop during the first week of the fall semester. I will not raise the enrollment over 150 students. However, spots should open up as others drop during the first week. I will make the announcements about who can add during class, and I will give first priority to senior Zoology majors.

Question 3:
I have three finals on the day that I have my Cell Biology Final Exam. Will you provide me with a time for a make-up exam?

Answer 3:
The answer to this question is almost always no, and this is due to OU policies for final exams. However, you are not expected to take more than two final examinations in one day. If you end up having three or more exams scheduled in a day, you can request make-up exams according to the following policy (excerpt from http://admissions.ou.edu/finalsfall.htm). In almost all circumstances, this will require one of your other instructors to provide you with a make-up exam during finals week.

"10. In cases where a student has three or more exams scheduled for the same day, instructors must offer make-up exams. The student's number of exams will be reduced to two by the following procedure:
a. If a student has three or more exams on the same day, the instructor(s) giving the third and subsequent exams must provide make-up exams during the week designated for final exams for that semester;
b. The student must notify the instructor or department of the third and subsequent final exams scheduled within a single day. Such notification must be given to the specific instructor or department before the end of the twelfth week of classes (sixth week of summer session).

"11. In the event a conflict should arise from the scheduling of two or more examinations at the same time, the student will attend the examination for the class that met first during the week, according to the student's class schedule. The instructor(s) giving the second and subsequent exams must provide make-up exams during the week designated for final exams for that semester."

Question 4:
I am currently failing this course, and I want to change from taking the course for credit to auditing the class. Can I do this?

Answer 4:
No, you cannot audit the course. As explained in the OU Catalog (http://www.ou.edu/admrec/auditreg.htm), "A change of enrollment from credit to audit may be made during the first ten weeks of classes of a regular semester or five weeks of classes of a summer session, provided the student is passing at the time the change is processed."

Question 5:
I am currently failing this course, and I want to withdraw. Will I receive an F?

Answer 5:
I follow the spirit of the OU grading regulations. This means that if you are currently failing the course, and more then six weeks have passed, I will record a grade of F on the drop slip.
